Teamwork

Smile He's thirteen the first time he sees Lydia Martin. It happens on the night of the full moon, the first time he'll change and claim his birthright as Beta to his older brother's Alpha, Elsworth Hale.
He's chained up in the basement with rusted iron around his neck, wrists, and ankles that he imagines has held many generations of Hale children undergoing their first transformation before him. Elsworth has already filled his head with exaggerated retellings of the pain he felt with his first transformation years before, as if the claw marks that litter the basement walls and concrete floor aren't enough of an indication of what his night is bound to consist of.
Sitting on the cold basement floor he thinks over the only piece of advice Elsworth has given him, find your anchor or get used to this place. He knows Elsworth's anchor is pride. He knows his anchor, whatever it is, is supposed to keep him in control of the wolf within - in control of the transformation.
This is it, he begins to think as his skin tingles just below the surface and he feels his muscles become taut. There's no control here, nothing to focus on in the dank basement, but his own body betraying him in the moonlight. He flicks his tongue experimentally over his own sharp incisors when he hears a creak on the top step of the basement stairs. It can't be Elsworth, he took their mother to see Uncle Henry just hours ago.
"Hello?" he calls out into the darkness feeling stupid.
"Hi," replies a breathy voice into his right ear.
He trips backwards over the chains, frightened, when he sees her - pale skinned, with strawberry blonde hair cascading over her shoulders.
She flashes him a smile before disappearing seemingly out of thin air and Peter thinks that's it. Her smile is his anchor.
